Located in Budhanilkantha, a quiet residential suburb at the foothills of Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, this 2.5-storey family home responds to a compact, irregular plot within a rapidly densifying urban fabric.
The area’s calm residential character and cooler microclimate informed a design approach that prioritizes light, openness, and long-term adaptability.
CONCEPT
A family home to form new memories and stories, for all the generations
The architectural form responds directly to the site’s irregular geometry, carefully aligning with local byelaws and setback regulations. The footprint is optimized to extract maximum usability from a compact plot, balancing privacy with openness and allowing communal spaces to remain generous without compromising comfort.
Designed on a 1,900 sq.ft. (0-5-2-0) plot with roads on three sides, the house navigates regulatory constraints through a clear spatial strategy and vertical expansion. Rising land values and limited ground coverage informed the decision to build upward, resulting in a two-and-a-half-storey home that prioritizes efficient planning and long-term adaptability.
The lower level accommodates shared living spaces, including an open living and dining area designed to feel expansive despite the compact footprint. Abundant natural light animates the interiors, while fluted glass panels—integrated with kitchen storage—maintain visual permeability and enhance the sense of openness.
The living room, oriented to the west, has naturally evolved into a sun-filled family space. Afternoon light washes across the room, creating a dynamic interior where shadows and warmth shift throughout the day.
Additional flexible spaces on the lower level, such as a den or home office, provide quieter zones for work or leisure, allowing the house to adapt to changing family needs.
The upper floors are reserved for bedrooms and bathrooms, offering privacy and personal space for each family member. Designed for three generations, each bedroom reflects the personality and preferences of its occupant—from restrained, minimalist palettes to more expressive contemporary styles—creating individual sanctuaries within a shared home.
The middle floor features a cozy reading and library area overlooking the family space below. Sliding doors allow this zone to function either as a private retreat or as an extension of the communal areas, depending on daily use.
